After a 15-year career as a trawler skipper, he established strong connections throughout the west coast's fishing community, which proved invaluable for Kings of Connemara's development.
In 2006, Cathal launched the business, initially selling to continental buyers before expanding to direct exports with the acquisition of his first vivier truck in 2008. By 2011, operations shifted to the "lobster ponds," ancient tidal facilities from the 1930s, providing secure, long-term storage for shellfish in their natural habitat.
Today, nestled at Connemara's westernmost edge, these rare seafood ponds harbor the bounty of the untamed sea. With Cathal's expertise and these unique facilities, Kings of Connemara fulfills its mission of exporting the world's finest sustainably-sourced shellfish.
