"Scottish Salmon Industry Advances Circular Economy through Ace Aquatec and Tiny Fish Collaboration"
Ace Aquatec, specialists in aquaculture technology, and start-up Tiny Fish have joined forces to bolster the circular economy within Scotland's salmon farming sector. Their aim is to tap into new premium food markets for the industry's smallest fish, marking a significant shift from the common practice of composting lost fish.
With Scottish salmon farms boasting a remarkable monthly survival rate of 97 to 99 percent, the collaboration seeks to redefine the fate of these small fish by harvesting them as a premium food product. During the salmon's freshwater phase, typically within the first year after hatching, Ace Aquatec's Humane Culling System will facilitate the removal of select smaller fish, while the larger salmon continue their growth at sea.
"This initiative underscores the Scottish aquaculture industry's dedication to sustainability throughout the harvesting process," remarked Teresa Garzon of Tiny Fish in a press release unveiling the partnership.
Ace Aquatec will provide the culling system, while Tiny Fish will handle the harvesting, processing, and distribution of the small salmon to various markets, including restaurants, hotels, and pet food suppliers across the UK.
Notable clients such as Mowi and Landcatch are already witnessing the positive impacts of this collaboration, with some of the smallest fish being repurposed for human consumption and pet food.
The partnership's innovative approach has earned them a nomination in the "Collaboration" category at the prestigious Aquaculture Awards 2024, underscoring their commitment to driving sustainability in the industry. The winners will be announced on May 15th in Aviemore.
