Canadian Fish and Seafood Opportunities Fund, the government-backed funding program supporting the Choose Canadian Seafood campaign, expired in March 2024, as confirmed by Fisheries Council of Canada (FCC) President Paul Lansbergen.
Due to this, the Choose Canadian Seafood campaign has been placed on hold, with limited resources available for updating its website, Lansbergen informed SeafoodSource. Launched in 2018 by the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance (CAIA) and the FCC, the campaign aimed to promote domestically produced seafood products to Canadian consumers, with a focus on marketing initiatives and pandemic recovery efforts.
Despite the campaign's pause, last November saw its expansion through a partnership with retailers Sobeys and Safeway. Over 300 Sobeys and Safeway locations across Canada featured "Choose Canadian Seafood" labels, accompanied by activations such as recipe booklets distribution at metro locations in Ontario.
CAIA President and CEO Timothy Kennedy highlighted the campaign's enhanced website, featuring a comprehensive seafood guide emphasizing nutritional benefits and industry sustainability, along with a monthly newsletter to engage consumers.
Lansbergen expressed hopes that the campaign's expansion would further bolster Canadians' demand for seafood.
