To protect the king crab population, the Norwegian fishing industry has implemented strict regulations. Only males of a specific shell diameter are permitted to be caught, and quotas are adjusted annually based on population assessments.
Fishing for king crabs occurs year-round, with only licensed fishermen authorized to catch them. Using special baskets, the crabs are captured alive. The fleet consists of small coastal vessels that operate within short distances between fishing areas in the fjords and coastal regions, transporting the catch to harbors.
 
PRODUCTS
The king crab, Norway's most sought-after catch, thrives in the frigid waters of the far north, beyond the Arctic Circle. Nearly half a century ago, these majestic creatures migrated from the Russian Barents Sea to Norwegian waters, particularly in Finnmark. Weighing up to eight kilograms and boasting a leg span of up to two meters, the king crab is renowned for its formidable claws. One of these claws, resembling a scepter, is notably larger and used by the crab to crack open its prey.
The meat of the king crab is renowned for its tender and succulent texture, typically enjoyed by consuming the legs and claws. This prized seafood offers a wealth of nutritional benefits, making it an excellent choice for a balanced diet and promoting overall well-being. King crab meat is notably rich in protein, vitamin A, vitamin B12, riboflavin, selenium, antioxidants, as well as essential minerals such as iron, selenium, and iodine.
