Lerøy, a prominent figure in the salmon farming industry, announces a breakthrough in utilizing the previously overlooked resource of salmon blood, a culmination of over two decades of industry efforts. According to SINTEF, an esteemed research organization, the aquaculture sector achieves a remarkable residual raw material utilization rate of approximately 94%, with the exception of blood, which has remained untapped.
Mats Trones, leading Lerøy's new 100% Fish department dedicated to innovation and sustainability, expresses pride in the development of SalmoFer, a pioneering iron ingredient derived from salmon blood. This innovative product, touted as the world's first of its kind, harnesses the natural richness of heme iron found in salmon hemoglobin.
Trones highlights the superior absorption efficiency of heme iron, which mitigates common side effects associated with traditional iron supplements, such as stomach upset and constipation. Moreover, SalmoFer's absorption remains unaffected by common dietary factors like coffee, tea, or dairy products.
Lerøy aims to leverage its raw materials and expertise to introduce more innovative products to market, thereby enhancing value and sustainability across the industry. While Trones remains discreet about ongoing projects, he hints at several exciting initiatives underway, both internally and through strategic partnerships.
