UMAMI Bioworks, a Singapore-based cultivated meats company, has acquired Shiok Meats, a cultivated meat and seafood company. The merger grants UMAMI Bioworks control over Shiok Meats' research, particularly focusing on cell-based crustacean products like lobster and shrimp. UMAMI Bioworks aims to accelerate the development of sustainable cultivated seafood through this strategic combination. Previously, in June 2023, Shiok Meats paused its development of cell-cultured seafood to concentrate on cell-cultured beef due to financial constraints. UMAMI Bioworks recently announced plans to open a cultivated meats factory in Malaysia in partnership with Cell AgriTech, slated to be the largest cell-cultivation facility in the Asia-Pacific region. Despite the shift, seafood alternatives remain a priority for the merged entity, as stated by Shiok Meats CEO and Co-Founder Sandhya Sriram. 2Revo Foods, a plant-based food company based in Vienna, Austria, has introduced its latest product, THE KRAKEN, an octopus analog made from fungi-protein. THE KRAKEN replicates the appearance and texture of real octopus tentacles, offering a high-protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and fiber-rich alternative. Revo Foods CEO Robin Simsa highlighted the rapid technological advancements in the plant-based food industry, expressing confidence in the potential for plant-based products to closely resemble animal-based counterparts in taste and texture in the near future. THE KRAKEN is versatile and can be enjoyed straight out of the package or prepared through various cooking methods, catering to octopus enthusiasts with its unique appearance and taste. Conagra Brands, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A., unveiled its Ultimate Plant-Based Fish at Expo West in Anaheim, California, U.S.A. The product offers a plant-based alternative for enjoying fish and chips, featuring three-ounce filets coated in a crispy panko breading. Conagra's Ultimate Plant-Based Fish aims to satisfy consumer demand for sustainable and delicious seafood alternatives, contributing to the growing plant-based food market.
