Luke’s Lobster, the Saco, Maine-based restaurant chain, has announced an expansion of its Lift All Boats program, originally launched in the summer of 2022. This initiative aims to foster involvement of Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) youth in Maine’s lobster industry.
Under the program, high school students from the Portland, Maine area gain firsthand exposure to the workings of the industry through fishing trips and other related activities. Working alongside local fishermen in Maine's Casco Bay, students receive hands-on experience and opportunities to network with industry professionals, facilitated by Luke’s Lobster employees.
Ben Conniff, Chief Innovation Officer at Luke’s Lobster, revealed plans to operate the program more extensively this year, providing a more immersive experience akin to a full-time job. Additionally, an advanced section will be introduced for returning students, involving deeper offshore fishing experiences.
The upcoming summer program will feature a diverse array of guest speakers from across the industry, engaging with students on a daily basis. Previous speakers include Moody Harney of Real Mother Shuckers and Luke’s Lobster CFO Steven Song, offering insights into entrepreneurship and personal finance, respectively.
Participating students receive tracking gear, a daily stipend, and meals at Luke’s Lobster restaurant in Portland. Since its inception, the program has expanded significantly, with 25 slots available for the summer of 2024, up from just four initially.
Recognized for its impact, the Lift All Boats program received the Acme Smoked Fish Foundation’s Seafood Industry Climate Award (SICA) in 2023, securing USD 40,000 (EUR 36,750) to support its expansion. This funding facilitated the hiring of instructors to educate students on various aspects of lobstering under sustainable guidelines.
