"U.S. Shrimp Imports Rise in March 2024, India and Ecuador Lead Growth"
In March 2024, U.S. shrimp imports climbed to 139.5 million pounds (63,269 MT), exhibiting an upward trend compared to the same period in 2023. Statistics from NOAA reveal that India's exports surged to 51.4 million pounds (23,312 MT), while Ecuador significantly increased its shipments to 48 million pounds (21,754 MT) during the same month.
Conversely, Indonesia experienced a decline in its U.S. shrimp exports, dropping to 21 million pounds (9,516 MT) in March 2024. Vietnam surpassed both India and Ecuador with a remarkable 39 percent monthly growth, reaching 8.4 million pounds (3,815 MT) in U.S. shrimp exports.
However, other exporting nations such as Thailand, Mexico, and Argentina faced setbacks in their U.S. shrimp exports, witnessing declines of 25 percent or more.
Year-to-date figures through March indicate a steady increase in U.S. shrimp imports, totaling 401.7 million pounds (182,224 MT), compared to the same period in 2023. Nevertheless, the outlook for shrimp imports in 2024 may be influenced by the updated preliminary determination of countervailing duties issued by the U.S. Commerce Department in April, affecting Ecuador, India, and Vietnam.
