The Seafood Expo Global 2023 showcased a pivotal session titled "Protecting Fishers’ Rights – A Tackle Box of Rights-Based Tools to Detect and Combat Forced Labor," featuring insights from esteemed industry experts. Hosted by Anne Zollner from the U.S. Department of Labor, the panel included Kirill Buketov from the International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering and Allied Workers' Associations, Hadi from the Indonesian Seafarers Gathering Forum (FOSPI), Laura Van Voorhees from the U.S. Department of Labor, and Chris Williams from the International Transport Workers' Federation.
This session, held on April 25, delved into the complexities of identifying and addressing forced labor within the fishing industry. Panelists highlighted the challenges faced by fishers, including the lack of written contracts and the presence of hidden labor abuses. They also discussed innovative tools and initiatives, such as the International Labor Organization's global forced labor detection tools and the U.S. Department of Labor's policy resources, aimed at combating forced labor across different countries and contexts.
