Mascato, a seafood company established in 1994 and headquartered in Vigo, Spain, has meticulously crafted its success by overseeing its entire supply chain, according to Mascato Quality and New Products Director Josune Larrañaga. Larrañaga emphasized the company's strategic focus on controlling raw materials as instrumental to its growth.
This approach has empowered Mascato to manage its fishing fleet in Namibia, operating trawlers and longliners for hake, monkfish vessels, and crab vessels. These fleets supply Mascato’s processing facilities in Spain and Namibia, with additional operations in the Great Sole Bank, an Atlantic Ocean region southwest of Cornwall, England.
Furthermore, Mascato operates mussel farms and processing facilities in Chile, significantly contributing to its value-added product line. Larrañaga highlighted the company's introduction of value-added mussels in 2007, fostering market growth through innovative offerings.
Maintaining ecological certifications, such as Marine Stewardship Council and Aquaculture Stewardship Council certifications, is paramount for Mascato across all sourcing endeavors, Larrañaga noted. The company actively engages in fishery improvement projects for sharks and swordfish, leveraging its expertise to develop related products.
Mascato's value-added product range, initially popularized in the U.S. under the "Next Wave" brand, has expanded to Spain. Larrañaga outlined the company's collaborative approach with clients to innovate and tailor products to meet evolving consumer preferences.
In addition to enhancing its hake business by diversifying product offerings, Mascato remains steadfast in its mission to make seafood accessible and appealing to everyday consumers. Larrañaga emphasized the company's commitment to promoting seafood as an affordable and versatile dietary option, advocating for its integration into daily meals.
