“Proximar Seafood Advances to Operational Phase in Japan RAS Facility Amidst Tank Breach Precautions"
Proximar Seafood, the Norwegian enterprise establishing a land-based salmon recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) facility near Mt. Fuji in Yama, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, has progressed towards operational readiness since initiating construction in 2021. Utilizing equipment supplied by AquaMaof, the facility reached completion in Q3 2023, thereafter steadily increasing biomass levels.
With a targeted production rate of 5,300 metric tons (MT) of head-on gutted (HOG) salmon annually, the facility has achieved a standing biomass of 57 MT as of its latest update on 23 February. Operational progress includes the completion and commencement of one out of four post-smolt growout facility modules, with the next module anticipated to receive its first fish by April.
CEO Joachim Nielsen expressed confidence in the transition from construction to operation, anticipating the inaugural fish harvest in Q3 of the current year. Proximar highlighted encouraging biological performance, emphasizing stable conditions and growth aligned with production projections.
Despite a setback involving the loss of 50,000 fish due to a tank breach on 3 February, attributed to leakage between floor panels and the tank's center module, proactive measures have been implemented to prevent recurrence. Foam injections around the center module aim to prevent drainage-induced breaches and ensure additional support.
While the incident is projected to impact the Q4 2024 harvest by approximately 250 MT, representing less than 5 percent of the total production, Nielsen emphasized ongoing efforts to address challenges, marking the upcoming year as pivotal for the company's progress.
