Norwegian Mountain Salmon Unveils Ambitious Plans for Massive Underground Salmon Farm in Scotland's Isle of Lewis"
According to reports from The Stornoway Gazette, Norwegian Mountain Salmon (NMS) has disclosed its vision to develop a groundbreaking underground salmon farm near Uig, with an annual production capacity of 90,000 tonnes.
Bård Hjelmen, CEO of NMS, informed the publication that while the project is in its early phases, they are also considering a site in Shetland as an alternative, aiming to finalize the location selection by summer.
The proposed £581 million venture, potentially generating 200 employment opportunities, has caught islanders by surprise, although Hjelmen noted that discussions with local authorities and site owners have been ongoing for a year.
Construction is slated to commence in 2027, with full operational capacity expected by 2033. Preliminary designs outline 224 tanks, each 22 meters in diameter, to be supplied with seawater via pumping systems.
NMS projects the site to be economically viable, citing a low mortality rate of 2%, significantly below the 22% average experienced in traditional Scottish salmon farming in 2023. Moreover, the subterranean facility promises minimal visual impact, eliminating risks of salmon escape and exposure to marine parasites like sea lice.
In addition to the Lewis proposal, NMS is also eyeing a similar 25,000-tonne capacity salmon farm in tunnels on Norway's Utsira Island, employing a hybrid recirculation-flow-through system.
While NMS' concepts may seem audacious, they echo the pioneering ambitions of earlier initiatives like World Heritage Salmon's 2021 proposal for a 100,000-tonne farm within abandoned mine tunnels in Sunnylvsfjorden.
