The National Fisheries Institute (NFI) has recently forged a partnership with the National Women, Infants, and Children Association (NWA) as a small business ally, furthering NFI's advocacy efforts to bolster the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children.
In a statement, NFI President and CEO Lisa Wallenda Picard emphasized the significance of ensuring access to seafood, a renowned superfood, particularly for communities facing nutritional risks. Picard highlighted affordable, shelf-stable options like canned salmon as crucial components of the program, offering a nutrient-rich protein vital for health.
The USDA's proposal in November 2022 aimed to increase the presence of seafood in food packages for the Women, Infants, and Children’s Supplemental Nutrition program, a move supported by NFI members across various states. This proposed rule, the program's first update since 2009, integrates recommendations from esteemed bodies such as the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020-2025.
Meanwhile, the Coalition for Sustainable Aquaculture (CSA) announced on 20 February the addition of Food + Planet, RETI Center, and Sea Pact to its portfolio of environmental groups. Alongside these additions, Galveston, Texas-based commercial fisherman captain Scott Hickman and five graduate students have joined CSA to contribute to its mission of stakeholder-led efforts in promoting sustainable aquaculture.
Scott Hickman emphasized the potential of offshore aquaculture to bolster a healthy, sustainable U.S. seafood economy, complementing wild-caught fishing and addressing the demand for locally sourced seafood.
