Updates to Label Rouge Quality Mark Set to Boost Scottish Salmon Industry and European Market Presence
France's renowned Label Rouge quality mark, established in the 1960s, undergoes modifications to accommodate larger fish, a move hailed by Scotland's salmon industry as a pivotal step towards market expansion in Europe.
Scottish Quality Salmon Chair, Su Cox, underscores the importance of the Label Rouge designation in validating the industry's commitment to stringent quality standards and global recognition of provenance.
The recent announcement by the French government permits fish weighing between 6 to 8 kilograms to bear the label, a change anticipated to elevate sales revenue for Scottish salmon across France and Europe, according to Salmon Scotland.
France stands as the primary export destination for Scottish farmed salmon, contributing GBP 272 million in export value in 2023, with approximately one-third falling under the Label Rouge category. Recognition of the mark is also growing in Spain, Germany, and Italy.
Salmon Scotland's Chief Executive, Tavish Scott, lauds Label Rouge Scottish salmon as a cornerstone of sector success, emphasizing its premium status in generating higher revenues vital for the Scottish economy and rural communities.
In addition to accommodating larger fish, the updated regulations allow for the deployment of larger smolt into net pens, enhancing survival rates and minimizing ocean dwell time. Alternative ingredients such as insects and algal oils are permitted in aquaculture feed, with a new requirement mandating omega-3 oil content in salmon flesh.
Scott affirms that these adjustments will bolster sales while maintaining exceptional quality and sustainability standards, crucial priorities for the salmon farming industry.
