Scottish Aquaculture Delegates Affirm Value of Aqua Nor Exhibition
Participation in last year's Aqua Nor exhibition yielded promising prospects for three-quarters of the companies representing the Scottish pavilion, with expectations of increased turnover. In August 2023, a collaborative effort involving Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), the Sustainable Aquaculture Innovation Centre (SAIC), and the Scottish Government's Marine Directorate facilitated a delegation of 18 aquaculture supply chain businesses from Scotland to participate in the world's largest aquaculture technology showcase in Trondheim. The event drew an estimated 25,000 attendees from 76 countries over three days.
Representatives from companies such as OTAQ, GenusWave, MiAlgae, Krucial, and more showcased Scotland's ambition, capability, and capacity as an innovative technology, product, and service provider. The Scottish pavilion, featuring 20 exhibitor pods, presentation spaces, and collaboration areas, was inaugurated by Mairi Gougeon, the Scottish Government's Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, Land Reform, and Islands.
Initial feedback from the pavilion organizers indicates a high level of success, with 76 percent of exhibitors anticipating increased turnover over the next three years due to their participation in Aqua Nor. Nearly all exhibitors (94 percent) reported that the event met or exceeded their expectations. Notably, the delegation left feeling optimistic about opportunities for new business contacts or leads, opportunities with existing contacts, potential new customers, and potential new markets.
Tom Murdoch, Managing Director at Brimmond, expressed satisfaction with Aqua Nor's outcomes, highlighting securing a significant marine crane rental deal with one of the world's leading aquaculture companies as a result of discussions initiated at the event.
Looking ahead, Cabinet Secretary Mairi Gougeon expressed enthusiasm for promoting Scotland's aquaculture sector internationally at Aqua Sur in March. She emphasized the importance of such international conferences in fostering partnerships, creating economic opportunities, and showcasing Scotland's innovation and commitment to quality in aquaculture.
