Chinese oyster producer Shandong Lighthouse Jellyfish Marine Technology Co. is aiming to introduce frozen oysters into the European Union market, presenting its liquid nitrogen frozen fresh oyster meat and half-shell oysters to European distributors. This freezing method, according to the company's director, Wang Lingling, allows for efficient meal preparation upon thawing, with minimal difference in texture, flavor, and nutritional value compared to fresh oysters. Wang highlighted that the liquid nitrogen treatment extends the oysters' shelf life to over a year.
Operating under the English name Turritopsis nutricula for marketing purposes, the company emphasizes its ability to meet the stringent hygiene standards of the European Union.
Having received recognition for its responsible aquaculture practices, including an Encourage Promotion Award from the Aquaculture Stewardship Council in 2020 and an Outstanding Partner Award in 2022, Shandong Lighthouse Jellyfish has established itself as a prominent player in China's oyster market. The company's video showcases its two-year oyster growing process in Rushan, near Qingdao, Shandong province, highlighting the ecological breeding ground and advanced cleaning processes at its factory.
Rushan oysters, known for their quality advantages, are now available at high-end retail outlets in Beijing at comparatively lower prices than imported varieties. Shandong Lighthouse Jellyfish CEO Hou Bin emphasized the continuous efforts to elevate Rushan oysters into the high-end market, underscoring their quality compared to other regional varieties in China. The availability of Rushan oysters through prominent retail chains like JD.com's 7 Fresh may potentially impact imported oysters by broadening consumer choice and accessibility.
