“WWF and Global Salmon Initiative Launch Groundbreaking ESG Risk Assessment Tool for Aquafeed Ingredients"
WWF, in collaboration with the Global Salmon Initiative (GSI), unveils a pioneering environmental, social, and governance (ESG) risk assessment tool for aquafeed ingredients, marking a significant step towards greater supply chain transparency and accountability.
This innovative tool, developed over a three-year period with input from GSI members, WWF, and industry feed companies, aims to enhance visibility into supply chains, enabling stakeholders to identify and address potential ESG risks effectively. While initially tailored for the salmon farming sector, its potential benefits extend to broader animal agricultural production sectors.
Providing a standardized framework for aquaculture companies to engage with feed suppliers, the tool offers a comprehensive overview of risks in the feed supply chain, including biodiversity loss, climate change, resource use, environmental footprint, health and welfare, nutrition, human rights, and governance.
Confidentiality of data collected through the tool is ensured, shared solely between feed suppliers and farming companies. By leveraging this tool to identify risks, the objective is to foster innovation, drive advancements in feed ingredient sourcing practices, and uphold the sustainability and healthfulness of farmed salmon.
Furthermore, the tool facilitates assessments of the scalability of future novel ingredients, empowering companies to make sourcing decisions aligned with strategic priorities and values.
In conjunction with the tool's launch, WWF, GSI, and Grieg Seafood release a business case titled "Feed of the Future: Transparent and Traceable," outlining challenges in feed production, the tool's development, and Grieg Seafood's application experience.
This inaugural iteration of the tool will undergo updates based on insights gathered from its implementation, ensuring ongoing support and alignment with its intended purpose.
