Ecuador Implements Measures to Enhance Sustainability in Shrimp Larvae Production
Ecuador's National Aquaculture Chamber (CNA) and the Sustainable Shrimp Partnership (SSP) have initiated a program aimed at enhancing the country's shrimp larvae production. The 'Scale Up Program for Shrimp Hatcheries' was unveiled by both entities at the AquaExpo Santa Elena event in the coastal city of Salinas at the end of February.

The 'Scale Up Program for Shrimp Hatcheries,' initiated by Ecuador's National Aquaculture Chamber (CNA) and the Sustainable Shrimp Partnership (SSP), aims to ensure sustainability practices across the shrimp larvae production chain. According to SSP Director Pamela Nath, the program seeks to recognize hatcheries committed to enhancing product quality and minimizing environmental and social impacts.
Central to the program is the implementation of responsible practices throughout hatchery operations, facilitated by tools provided by SSP, including the Technical Guide for the Sustainability of Shrimp Hatcheries. This guide, developed by SSP, marks the first manual dedicated to establishing specific regulations for sustainable shrimp larvae production in Ecuador. It focuses on regulatory compliance, infrastructure adequacy, resource management, sanitation, biosecurity, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility.
To support hatcheries in assessing compliance and identifying areas for improvement, the program includes training sessions and audits. José Antonio Camposano, Executive President of CNA, emphasized that the initiative not only elevates industry standards but also underscores Ecuador's commitment to sustainability, enhancing its reputation as a responsible leader in global shrimp production.
Inve Aquaculture, an associate member of SSP, actively contributed to the program's development. Xavier Valdez, Inve Aquaculture Ecuador Area Manager, highlighted the program's emphasis on enhancing biosecurity measures, advanced water treatment processes, and reducing chemical usage in live food production to minimize waste discharge.
CNA is set to showcase the program alongside several member companies at the 2024 Seafood Expo North America in Boston, Massachusetts. The Ecuadorian pavilion, titled 'First Class Shrimp,' will occupy 288 square meters, marking its largest-ever presence at the event.
