Despite growing up next to a commercial fishing dock off Chesapeake Bay in the Eastern U.S., Rob Mayo never imagined himself pursuing a career in the seafood industry. Despite enjoying his experiences assisting his neighbor with fishing, crabbing, and oystering as a child and developing a passion for quality seafood, Mayo initially explored other career paths as an adult. However, his affinity for the industry eventually drew him back, becoming too compelling to resist.

During a run, Mayo contemplated ways to maintain a healthy diet while having the energy for rigorous exercise, such as training for a triathlon. He concluded that consuming more seafood was the answer.
In 2012, he established Sizzlefish in Ayden, North Carolina, initially as a wholesale seafood business serving top-end grocery chains and restaurants. Recognizing the demand for high-quality seafood among consumers, he launched a direct-order arm to facilitate easier access to premium seafood.
Today, Sizzlefish delivers a variety of frozen fish and seafood directly to consumers across the United States, including Alaska Chinook salmon, Alaska halibut, Chilean sea bass, sea scallops, and Gulf shrimp. The company also offers seafood gift packages featuring Maine crab legs, seacuterie boards, and other themed items.
The company's growth has necessitated the inclusion of new freezer storage units and fulfillment floors to meet increasing demand. Sizzlefish ships orders nationwide within the continental U.S., with most deliveries arriving within one to three days.
Mayo emphasizes sustainability, accessibility, and convenience in the company's operations. He underscores Sizzlefish's commitment to providing consumers with high-quality, sustainably sourced seafood to create healthy, satisfying meals.
In a letter to customers on the company's website, Mayo expressed the mission of Sizzlefish: to enable people to eat well and live better by offering consistently delicious, pure, and natural fish portions. He assures customers of the company's dedication to providing honest information about the health benefits of their products and offers tools and tips for easy preparation.
