Great Northern Salmon Secures $6 Million Grants for RAS Farm Development
Great Northern Salmon, formerly known as Katahdin Salmon and based in Millinocket, Maine, U.S.A., has received funding totaling $6 million (EUR 5.5 million) for the construction of its recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) land-based farm. This funding includes a $5 million (EUR 4.6 million) grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and a $1 million (EUR 921,000) grant from the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development. These grants will cover the costs of remediating and preparing the former settling lagoon site of the Great Northern Paper Co. paper mill.
Katahdin Salmon CEO Marianne Naess expressed gratitude for being selected for such a significant grant, highlighting the high-quality work of development partner Our Katahdin and the potential for repurposing the site. Naess emphasized that the grants will reduce the project's overall capital expenditure and expedite construction, with a six-month timeline once underway. The company has issued a request for proposals for remediation work and will select a contractor managed by Sevee & Maher Engineering in the near future.
The decision to rename the company as Great Northern Salmon was inspired by the former paper mill site and signifies a new phase in its development. Naess emphasized the name's connection to the local community's history while reflecting the company's future ambitions. Additionally, Trondheim, Norway-based Nofitech has been chosen as the RAS vendor for the Millinocket farm. Nofitech CEO Robert Hundstad confirmed that design work will commence this summer, marking the beginning of a long-term partnership.
Great Northern Salmon's Head of RAS Technology, Dean Guest, expressed confidence in the partnership with Nofitech, citing shared values and Nofitech's reputation for delivering on expectations. Naess stated that while the focus is on developing the first site in Millinocket, the Great Northern Salmon brand is scalable for future locations in North America, reflecting the company's expansion ambitions.
