Barcelona Hosts Highly Successful Seafood Expo Global, Elevating Aquaculture Stewardship Council's (ASC) Presence,
The recent Seafood Expo Global event in Barcelona, Catalonia, proved to be a remarkable triumph for the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), drawing in hundreds of seafood enthusiasts, industry experts, retailers, buyers, and processors to its distinctive branded booth over the three-day affair. With over 35,000 seafood professionals in attendance, ASC's engagement was notable.
Among its highlights, ASC convened an expert panel session spotlighting the imperative of responsibly produced aquafeed, attracting a keen audience of over 100 participants. Titled “Feed Responsibly: Why Responsible Aquaculture Needs Responsible Feed,” the session featured industry leaders sharing insights on adopting the ASC Feed Standard to drive transparency and foster social and environmental enhancements across feed supply chains.
Reflecting on the event's success, ASC Feed Standard senior coordinator Alexandra Warrington expressed gratitude for the industry's endorsement of responsible feed practices. Warrington emphasized the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in advancing environmentally and socially responsible aquaculture practices.
The expert panel boasted esteemed participants, including Jorge Diaz, Global Sustainability Manager at Skretting; Adam Brennan, Chief Sustainability Officer at Thai Union; and Ruth Hoban, Head of Sustainability at New England Seafood. Attendees gained valuable perspectives on the Feed Standard and its implementation process from these industry leaders.
Jorge Diaz underscored the benefits of certification, citing improved traceability and risk mitigation, while Adam Brennan highlighted ASC's unique approach in addressing deforestation and land conversion in feed production. The momentum towards responsible feed production is further propelled by an increasing number of feed companies undergoing certification audits globally.
ASC is committed to facilitating this transition, setting a deadline of October 2025 for ASC-certified farms to transition to sourcing compliant feed under the ASC Feed Standard. Additionally, feed mills obtaining certification in 2024 stand to benefit from waived license fees on compliant feed production for the current calendar year, incentivizing adherence to responsible feed practices.
