Introducing Vertical Fish, a collaborative research initiative spearheaded by the Portuguese company MC, in conjunction with partners like SA - Algae for Future and the University of Porto. This project is dedicated to pioneering novel methodologies for assessing the quality of fish products, with a focus on enhancing food safety measures and curbing wastage.
Ondina Afonso, Director of Quality and Research at MC, highlighted the project's core objectives in a recent press release. "Our mission is to streamline the assessment of fish quality and enhance traceability protocols throughout the entire value chain. This ensures that consumers receive the safest and freshest fish," stated Afonso.
Furthermore, the project aims to develop tools facilitating the identification of industry best practices, thereby fostering a reduction in food waste. Leveraging cutting-edge image processing software and rapid detection kits for biochemical alterations, Vertical Fish seeks to swiftly identify any morphological, structural, or molecular changes in fish products that may compromise food safety.
In addition to its focus on quality and traceability, Vertical Fish endeavors to address sustainability within the aquaculture sector. Through a zero-waste approach, researchers plan to harness the potential of low-trophic organisms like microalgae and marine invertebrates. By converting waste nutrients generated during fish farming into reusable biomass, the project aims to boost production efficiency while minimizing costs, promoting sustainable practices for industry advancement.
