"Scottish Sea Farms to Consolidate Multiple Sites into New Offshore Facility 'Billy Baa'"
Scottish Sea Farms has announced plans to consolidate its Sandsound Voe – Brei Geo Inshore, Brei Geo Offshore, Sandsound Voe, and Sandsound Bixter farms into a single offshore site named Billy Baa. This move, approved by the Shetland Islands Council, will enhance operational efficiency and optimize growing conditions for salmon.
The new farm, positioned slightly farther offshore, is expected to provide improved conditions conducive to salmon growth. By combining smaller farms into one larger facility with fewer but larger pens, the company aims to maximize water exchange and oxygen levels, thereby enhancing fish health, welfare, and survival.
According to Anne Anderson, Scottish Sea Farms' Head of Sustainability and Development, the consolidation will not increase environmental impact beyond the levels observed at the previous farms. The next step involves obtaining a SEPA CAR license, which will regulate fish volumes and veterinary medicines to mitigate environmental impact.
Pending successful approval, Scottish Sea Farms anticipates stocking salmon at the new Billy Baa location by 2026.
