In 1987, fueled by their passion for fishing, two young friends, Richard Murphy and Peter O'Sullivan, laid the foundation for what would evolve into Shellfish Ireland. Originating in the quaint town of Castletownbere in West Cork, their days were filled with fishing in the mornings, processing the catch in the afternoons, and delivering to customers in the evenings. Despite the long hours and hard work, they relished the challenge.
Over the years, Shellfish Ireland burgeoned into a reputable and dependable seafood producer. Today, we stand as the foremost supplier of sustainable shellfish, encompassing crab, shrimp, lobster, and prawns, serving both local and international markets. Our guiding ethos is straightforward: bring Ireland's rich shellfish bounty to the world in a sustainable manner, ensuring future generations can savor this wholesome and delectable natural resource.
In a significant stride, the company established a state-of-the-art facility 12 years later, officially opened on the 31st of June 1999 by Michael Woods.
Expanding our procurement network, we not only source from local vessels that land daily but also extend our reach to vessels along the south and west coast of Ireland. All harvested produce is collected by our dedicated vans and processed in our own factory.
Shellfish Ireland boasts a diverse product range, continually innovating and growing each day to meet the evolving demands of our customers.
Shellfish Ireland assumes a leadership role in safeguarding the long-term viability of stocks through a range of sustainability initiatives.
Fishery Improvement Projects
Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs) serve as a collaborative platform for fishermen, seafood buyers, and suppliers to preserve and enhance specific fisheries by implementing strategic plans over defined time periods.
Ireland, guided by a national strategy, is actively developing FIPs to ensure the sustained protection and growth of its fisheries.
Shellfish Ireland's Contribution to FIPs
Shellfish Ireland actively participates in the Brown Crab FIP, playing a crucial role in the development and implementation of the plan for brown crab sustainability.
Lobster V-Notching Program
The lobster V-notching program aims to enhance the sustainability of Ireland's lobster stocks by safeguarding female lobsters to enable multiple breeding cycles.
This method involves manually notching a simple V shape into the tail of a female lobster when initially caught. Shellfish Ireland vessels are proud members of Ireland's V-notching program.
Shrimp
All shrimp offered by Shellfish Ireland are captured in pots by inshore vessels that strictly adhere to closed seasons, ensuring responsible and sustainable harvesting practices.
