SCOTTISH WEST COAST LANGOUSTINE CO-OPERATIVE
The inception of the marketing initiative by The Scottish West Coast Langoustine Co-operative can be traced back to the Scottish Langoustine Project. This project, initially funded by the Scottish government, was a limited initiative aimed at conducting a comprehensive Supply Chain Analysis for UK retail opportunities regarding whole fresh Scottish langoustines. Under the management of the Mallaig & North West Fishermen's Association, the project began in late 2010, with Professor Keivan Zokaie from S A Partners LLP, Caerphilly, Wales, leading the academic study.
The findings, explored in early 2011, revealed significant interest from Sainsbury's in featuring whole fresh Scottish langoustines in their national fresh fish displays. A pivotal meeting in Perth in July 2011, attended by a senior Sainsbury's executive, Dr. Zokaei, John Hermse (CEO - Mallaig & North West Fishermen's Association), and Neil Robertson (Neil Robertson Associates), led to a decision to assess the langoustines' suitability through detailed appraisals by Sainsbury's Food Technologists and Food Scientists.
Scottish langoustines met Sainsbury's expectations, prompting further negotiations in Mallaig in September 2011. However, just as the Scottish Langoustine Project secured "Preferred Supplier" status with Sainsbury's, the initial government funding ran out, causing a temporary stall in the project.
Recognizing the project's significance for the future sustainability of Scotland's langoustine fishermen, a determined quartet comprising John, Neil, Keivan, and Tony pursued additional funding opportunities through a vigorous, self-financed campaign. Meetings with Scottish Government officials in Edinburgh in November 2011 and lobbying efforts, including engagements with local MSP Dave Thompson, culminated in a meeting with Environment & Rural Affairs Cabinet Secretary, Richard Lochhead MSP, in the Scottish Parliament in late March 2012. During this meeting, the Cabinet Secretary, acknowledging the project's merits, agreed to support the ambitions for Scotland's langoustine fishermen by endorsing an application for European Fisheries Fund grant funding.
