The Nature Conservancy (TNC) unveils a groundbreaking publication titled "Advancing Aquaculture: A Global Framework for Monitoring and Enhancing Ecological Benefits." This comprehensive resource, aimed at aquaculture producers, researchers, and industry stakeholders, offers standardized guidelines for understanding and appreciating the ecological advantages of regenerative and restorative aquaculture.
With the potential to deliver diverse ecosystem benefits beyond mere product yields, responsible aquaculture practices can foster nutrient removal from water columns and boost biodiversity by creating intricate habitats. However, TNC's framework highlights a prevalent lack of awareness among producers regarding these benefits. Furthermore, existing recognition often lacks standardized methods for quantification or valuation, hindering comprehensive understanding.
The newly introduced TNC framework addresses these gaps by establishing a universal approach for monitoring and evaluating positive environmental impacts, while also considering socioeconomic implications. Tailored for industry operators, sector associations, and support organizations, the publication features individual frameworks for macroalgae, molluscs (excluding cephalopods), and finfish aquaculture sectors. These guidelines are adaptable for partial or full application, with plans for future iterations to include inland restorative aquaculture practices.
