Kaldbakur, an investment firm owned by the founders of Icelandic seafood company Samherji, has finalized the acquisition of Optima International. Based in Akureyri, Iceland, Kaldbakur assumed management of certain Samherji assets in 2022. The acquisition of Optimar from German investment firm Franz Haniel & Cie was confirmed in a statement.

Following its acquisition by Kaldbakur, Optima International has affirmed its commitment to operating independently while continuing to serve its clientele. The company, headquartered in Valderøya, an island situated off Norway's west coast near Ålesund, specializes in manufacturing automated fish-processing systems for various sectors including fishing vessels, land-based processing facilities, and aquaculture operations.
Kaldbakur CEO Eiríkur S. Jóhannsson expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting Optimar's established reputation as a reliable partner within the global fishing industry. He emphasized the potential synergies the collaboration will offer, both for Optimar and the broader Kaldbakur portfolio.
The acquisition, the financial details of which were not disclosed by either party, aims to bolster Kaldbakur's strategic network in the region.
Optimar CEO Georg Saint-Denis expressed satisfaction with the new arrangement, likening it to a homecoming given the longstanding collaboration between the two entities. He views the acquisition as a pivotal moment for Optimar's strategic trajectory.
Haniel Investment Partner Thessa von Hülsen praised Kaldbakur as an ideal strategic partner for Optimar and extended well wishes for the success of the partnership.
Optima International's selection by the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries to participate in the FangstID program, aimed at integrating technological solutions for accurate catch identification and registration on fishing vessels, underscores its commitment to innovation. Additionally, the company has actively engaged in hosting seminars addressing animal welfare concerns within the seafood industry.
