"US Agencies Unveil Top 10 Finalists for Global Fishing Forecast Grand Challenge" Launched in January, the Global Fishing Forecast Grand Challenge, led by the United States National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and the National Security Innovation Network (NSIN), aims to encourage the development of innovative strategies to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities through enhanced forecasting of industrial fishing patterns.
The selected finalists presented a diverse array of potential solutions, incorporating various data sources, visualization techniques, risk analysis methods, remote sensing technologies, and artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) algorithms.
Each finalist received a cash prize of USD 25,000 (EUR 24,000) for advancing to this stage of the competition.
NGA research scientist and Forecast Grand Challenge program manager, Mike Brady, emphasized the strategic advantage of predicting future industrial fishing locations for efficient resource allocation, maritime enforcement, and satellite-based monitoring of vessels involved in IUU fishing.
An interagency panel of experts conducted a rigorous evaluation process, selecting the finalists based on proposed forecast methods and operational concepts submitted by applicants.
In the upcoming phase, the 10 finalists will pitch their forecasting solutions to the judging panel, with the top three winners to be announced later this summer. The first-place solution will receive USD 500,000 (EUR 462,000), followed by USD 200,000 (EUR 185,000) for second place and USD 50,000 (EUR 46,000) for third place.
The 10 finalists include a mix of organizations specializing in artificial intelligence research, geospatial analytics, remote sensing technologies, and data visualization techniques.
These solutions hold significant promise in combating IUU fishing, which poses threats to fisheries, ecosystems, coastal economies, and global food security.
The Global Fishing Forecast Grand Challenge aligns with NGA's broader initiatives to leverage commercial techniques and innovative approaches to enhance maritime awareness and combat illicit maritime activities.
Ronzelle Green, Director of Research and Development (R&D) at NGA, highlighted the importance of these novel methods in augmenting capabilities to forecast industrial fishing activities, enabling proactive measures to combat IUU fishing effectively.
