During the prestigious Aquaculture UK conference, the Young Aquaculture Society (YAS) made its debut, marked by an event hosted by Salmon Scotland and coinciding with their AGM. The launch, led by Anas Sarwar, leader of the Scottish Labour Party, gathered key figures from the Scottish Salmon sector, offering a platform for 30 young professionals to network and gain insights into the future of salmon farming in Scotland.
In a statement quoted from a YAS press release, Anas Sarwar expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunities YAS presents to young professionals within the aquaculture industry. The event also featured Alison Brough, a YAS member and fish veterinarian at Scottish Sea Farms, who conveyed the organization's vision and gratitude to the organizers. Brough also announced an upcoming YAS event, a farm visit with SSF, providing valuable firsthand experience from egg to harvest for 20 YAS members.
With an already impressive membership of 150 individuals, YAS collaborated with various partners during the conference to bolster the careers of its members. Noteworthy collaborations included providing two YAS members with access to the Aquaculture UK Awards through the generosity of Salmon Scotland and AquaScot. Additionally, YAS members actively engaged with conference attendees at the Scale AQ stand and organized a successful morning fun run, in partnership with Scale AQ and Inverlussa Marine Services, raising funds for the RNLI.
