In a significant departure from its historical reliance on Asian markets, the Australian seafood industry has successfully diversified its reach to encompass the United States, Canada, and Europe. According to Manuel Barbera, Senior Business Development Manager at the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade), this shift has been facilitated by innovative shipping solutions and a concerted emphasis on sustainability initiatives.
Speaking at the 2024 Seafood Expo Global in Barcelona, Spain, Barbera highlighted the industry's resilience amid global supply chain disruptions, noting the burgeoning demand for Australian seafood in new markets. Austrade's Regional Marketing Strategist, Kelsey Hill, underscored the appeal of sustainability credentials, particularly Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification, which has resonated with North American and European buyers.
Embracing rigorous environmental standards, Australian fisheries and seafood exporters are striving to minimize their carbon footprint while attaining MSC and Aquaculture Stewardship Council certifications. Despite geographical challenges, such as transportation distances to Western markets, Hill emphasized the industry's commitment to sustainable practices, including innovations in freezing technology to preserve product quality while reducing environmental impact.
Barbera addressed concerns regarding the distance between Australia and Europe, asserting that the industry's unwavering dedication to sustainability mitigates logistical obstacles. Alongside sustainability efforts, the Australian seafood sector showcased premium offerings, including abalone, western rock lobster, and octopus, at the Seafood Expo Global.
Highlighting Australia's distinction as one of the few producers with MSC-certified octopus fisheries, Barbera emphasized the industry's strategic positioning on the global stage.
