At the 2024 Seafood Expo Global in Barcelona, Spain, the European Strategic Seafood Alliance was unveiled by the E.U. Fish Processors and Traders Association-European Federation of National Organizations of Importers and Exporters of Fish (AIPCE-CEP), European Association of Fish Producer Organizations (EAPO), Europêche, and the Federation of European Aquaculture Producers (FEAP). The alliance aims to advance shared objectives and promote key industry priorities on a broader platform, as articulated in a joint statement.
Highlighting the environmental and health benefits of seafood consumption, the alliance emphasized the importance of raising awareness among consumers. Advocating for policies that encourage increased seafood consumption within the European Union is among its primary goals. At the launch event, held during the Seafood Expo Global, the alliance emphasized the slogan "Eat Fish" to underscore this message.
In addition to promoting seafood consumption, the alliance seeks to enhance understanding of seafood production practices, nutritional advantages, and the individuals behind Europe's seafood industry. By pooling their efforts, the member organizations intend to elevate these issues in both E.U. and global policy discussions, representing a significant stride toward advancing E.U. fisheries and aquaculture objectives.
At its inaugural meeting during the expo, the alliance committed to advocating for equal prioritization of the seafood industry alongside agriculture by European governments and the European Parliament. This includes urging the European Commission to prioritize fisheries and aquaculture in its agenda for the 2024-2029 political mandate period, aligning with the framework outlined in the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.
Each member organization brings specific focus areas to the alliance's agenda. AIPCE-CEP concentrates on promoting seafood sustainability and ensuring European access to raw materials. EAPO advocates for clarity in marine environmental protection laws. Europêche seeks reform of the E.U.'s Common Fisheries Policy and alignment of global sustainability standards. FEAP champions a coherent E.U. food production policy to bolster domestic seafood supply and regional food security.
