Cooke Initiates Harvesting of Chile's Inaugural Organically Cultivated Atlantic Salmon
Cooke Chile, the Chilean aquaculture division of the Canadian seafood company Cooke, has commenced harvesting what it claims to be Chile's maiden batch of organically farmed Atlantic salmon. Certified under the guidelines set forth by the European Commission and Great Britain, this organic salmon is earmarked for distribution within the European Union. Initially constituting a quarter of Cooke's overall salmon output in Chile, this development marks a significant milestone in sustainable aquaculture practices.

Cooke Chile, the Chilean arm of Canadian seafood company Cooke, has achieved a significant milestone by initiating the harvesting of what it claims to be Chile's inaugural batch of organically farmed Atlantic salmon. This achievement follows extensive modifications throughout the production chain, involving the adoption of new technologies and modern farming processes related to stocking density and feed. Notably, Cooke Chile imported feed from its Scottish affiliate to facilitate organic production, as organic feed remains unavailable locally. Adjustments in salmon stocking density within sea pens were instrumental in meeting the requirements for organic certification, achieving a water-to-fish ratio of 99:1. Andres Parodi, Cooke Regional General Manager for Latin America, hailed this accomplishment as a testament to the company's commitment to sustainability and collaboration. Cooke CEO Glenn Cooke emphasized the substantial investments made in various aspects of salmon farming to realize this milestone, underscoring the dedication of the Chilean team and their adherence to environmental stewardship. Cooke's organic salmon from Chile meets rigorous standards, enabling export to the European Union and Great Britain, endorsed by the EU Organic green and white leaf logo. Notably, Cooke Chile's organic salmon venture appears to be unprecedented in Chilean salmon farming, as confirmed by trade body SalmonChile.
