"Japanese Yellowtail Producers Embrace Pellet-Based Feed for Enhanced Quality and Environmental Benefits"
Yoshitaka Ikeda, the general manager of Amakusa-based yellowtail processor Heian Kaisan Co., revealed the company's shift towards exclusively utilizing extruded pellets (EP) in the diet of their yellowtail fish. This departure from the traditional practice of feeding raw fish such as sand lance and mackerel aims to ensure consistent quality and meet evolving consumer preferences.
Speaking at the 2024 Seafood Osaka Show, Ikeda highlighted the drawbacks associated with raw feed, including early spoilage and flavor inconsistencies. Moreover, he emphasized consumer preferences leaning towards cleaner, less oily taste profiles, aligning with yellowtail raised on EP diets.
Heian Kaisan Co. also underscored additional benefits of EP diets, including reduced risk of harmful bacteria, customizable nutrition profiles, and environmental sustainability through minimized pollution.
Similarly, Yasuyuki Kabu, deputy director of the fisheries sales promotion department at Chubu Feed Co., endorsed the superiority of EP feed for their Ebisu Buri brand, emphasizing its extended freshness compared to moist pellets containing raw fish ingredients.
The shift towards pellet-based feed has garnered support from industry experts like Hisanori Kanno, Secretary General of the Marine Eco-Label (MEL) Japan Council, who emphasized its alignment with sustainability standards. As per MEL's new aquaculture standard, moist pelleted feed, categorized as raw fish, will be phased out by July 31, 2025, ensuring adherence to evolving industry practices.
