Scottish salmon exports have surged to £645 million, reaching their highest level in five years as global demand continues to strengthen. According to new HMRC data analyzed by Salmon Scotland, the value of exports rose by £65 million to £250 million in the first four months of 2024 alone, marking a substantial 36 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
The significant rise in export value accompanies a notable 35 percent increase in export volumes, with a substantial portion destined for European markets. Within the first four months of 2024, European countries imported 26,000 tonnes of Scottish salmon across 40 nations. France remains the largest importer, having purchased £143 million worth of Scottish salmon this year.
Salmon Scotland anticipates that 2024 could set a new record for international sales, underscoring salmon's position as the leading food export from the UK. The trade body has called on the next UK government to address post-Brexit regulatory challenges, urging streamlined processes and improved relations with the European Union to further boost exports.
Salmon Scotland's CEO, Tavish Scott, emphasized the urgency of easing export procedures to support Scottish farmers amid economic challenges, stating, "We look forward to collaborating with the incoming UK government to expand exports and enhance national prosperity.
