US Shrimp Imports in April 2024: Vietnam and Thailand Rise, Ecuador Declines

In April 2024, the United States imported 50,672 metric tons (MT), equivalent to 111 million pounds, of shrimp. This figure represents a decrease from the 56,000 MT (123 million pounds) imported in April 2023 and the 63,269 MT (129 million pounds) received in March 2024.

India retained its position as the leading shrimp exporter to the United States in April 2024, delivering 21,166 metric tons (MT) or 46 million pounds. This figure is slightly lower than the 21,451 MT (47 million pounds) sent in April 2023 and the 23,312 MT (51 million pounds) shipped in March 2024.
Ecuador exported 9,881 MT (21 million pounds) of shrimp to the US in April 2024, a decline from 13,559 MT (29 million pounds) in April 2023. Despite the April drop, Ecuador’s shrimp exports reached 21,754 MT (47 million pounds) in March 2024, with year-to-date exports approximately 5,000 MT (11 million pounds) higher than in 2023, indicating overall growth.
Vietnam's shrimp exports to the US increased to 4,009 MT (8.8 million pounds) in April 2024, up from 3,501 MT (7.7 million pounds) in April 2023 and 3,815 MT (8.4 million pounds) in March 2024. This growth highlights Vietnam's expanding shrimp-farming industry and improved production techniques, although countervailing duties continue to pose challenges.
Thailand’s shrimp exports to the US rose to 1,872 MT (4.1 million pounds) in April 2024, up from 1,305 MT (2.8 million pounds) in April 2023 and 1,325 MT (2.9 million pounds) in March 2024.
Mexico exported 1,176 MT (2.5 million pounds) of shrimp in April 2024, a decrease from 1,414 MT (3.1 million pounds) in April 2023 but an increase from the 1,095 MT (2.4 million pounds) sent in March 2024.
Argentina’s shrimp exports to the US totaled 996 MT (2.1 million pounds) in April 2024, down from 1,124 MT (2.4 million pounds) in April 2023 but up from the 973 MT (2.1 million pounds) shipped in March 2024.
Saudi Arabia increased its shrimp exports to the US, reaching 261 MT (575,406 pounds) in April 2024, up significantly from 48 MT (105,821 pounds) sent in April 2023.
Peru exported 192 MT (423,287 pounds) of shrimp to the US in April 2024, down from 208 MT (458,561 pounds) in April 2023 and 642 MT (1.4 million pounds) in March 2024.
Sri Lanka shipped 165 MT (363,762 pounds) to the US in April 2024, marking a significant increase as there were no shrimp imports from Sri Lanka in April 2023. This surge reflects Sri Lanka's efforts to expand its shrimp-farming sector and diversify its export markets.
China's shrimp exports to the US dropped to 129 MT (284,396 pounds) in April 2024, down from 354 MT (780,436 pounds) in April 2023 and 982 MT (2.1 million pounds) in March 2024.
